In short, work up season is when schools of pilchards travel into our waters from the north, get attacked from the air by flocks of hungry birds which then creates not only a visual spectacle but also a natural berley trail resulting in a feeding frenzy for larger fish, which in the Hauraki Gulf will mostly be snapper and kingfish. This is the predator hierarchy of the oceans in full thrilling action and if you only go on one fishing trip this year, this should be it.
